Topic: Running a Honey Pot in Virtual PC

Can I do this? I know you can achieve it but will it be obvious that its a Virtual environment. I suddenly realized this could be a very good solution for testing. We could run more tests on far less machines.

Re: Running a Honey Pot in Virtual PC

Whether its obvious would depend on who's attacking I guess. If your offering up a playground you need to make it look like its real even in a normal environment.

Re: Running a Honey Pot in Virtual PC

That's an interesting theory and if it worked it could make your trap more secure than anything else ever could be. If it worked then it would be wonderful but you'd need to work some to make it seem totally unprotected.

Re: Running a Honey Pot in Virtual PC

I guess hackers use tools to find your vunerabilities so you don't want to make it too obvious your open for attack. A real hacker will want some kind of challenge to get in.

Re: Running a Honey Pot in Virtual PC

I can tell by all the comments that you all have a lot more knowledge than I do but you've piqued my curiosity.  What in the world is a Honey Pot and what does it have to do with hackers?

Re: Running a Honey Pot in Virtual PC

Well, you know how ants are attracted to sweet things? That's the idea of a honeypot-the idea is to attract hackers to the honeypot, presumably with the hopes that they don't reach your real stuff. Give them something to play with and keep them busy so that the rest is safe.
