Topic: Operating system faults

What don't you guys like on the current operating systems on the market? I'll start. Windows - too unstable, too many crashes, too vulnerable to security risks. Mac OS - too snobbish, too uncustomizable, bad compatibility with the other OS's. Linux - too complicated.

What's your opinion?

Re: Operating system faults

If you don't like Windows, Mac or Linux I guess you've limited yourself a bit. Unix would be next I guess. But as the market is dominated by Windows and the alternatives are pretty much all Unix based its not much of a choice.

Re: Operating system faults

I love the Mac operating system, because it's so simple to use for people like me, people that don't know too many things about programming and what not. So I can't really answer your question, but I can only say what I like.

Re: Operating system faults

Linux is one of the most versatile OSs there is. Yes it is complicated and you have to learn-but once you do the majority of issues can be overcome. Biggest problem is drivers for non native hardware.

Windows-pricey for what it is, unstable, and for Vista-treats you like an idiot. I hate that. I like Macs but haven't used the most recent OS.

Re: Operating system faults

Vista treats people like idiots because most of them are. People complain about windows but its the way it is because thats what people wanted. A 2 year old can install Windows and get online, no learning curve, no effort - thats what people asked for and thats why Most of the planet uses it.

Re: Operating system faults

Most of the planet does not use it-most of the western world uses it. Elsewhere, open source software is the OS of choice because third world places cannot afford first world OS prices.

Re: Operating system faults

So, back to the original poster of this thread.  I am rather curious as to what operating system you are using as you eliminated those that most widespread.  Are you using some sort of open source operating system as the previous poster mentioned?  Let us know what you're using and why you think it's better than the alternatives you listed.

Re: Operating system faults

I would be interested in knowing that too.  It seems the OP has picked every operating system that I know of and doesn't like any of them.  I wonder what they are using as well.   I myself have used Windows and Mac OS and personally like Mac better.  I find it to be much more stable and reliable than Windows.

Re: Operating system faults

There are other operating systems out there like Google Chrome and some open source options but everything I've heard tells me the others are all rather limited.  I'm wondering what option she chose and what it does better than the popular ones.

Re: Operating system faults

I agree that Macs are way more stable than Windows but even that can have some problems. I don't think that the OP was suggesting that they don't use any of those, rather was just discussing the problems with them all.

Re: Operating system faults

My biggest gripe with Linux is the fact that even though there are moves to make it as point and click as possible, it still isn't there yet. I wish it was, I hope it gets there soon. Windows crashes too much.

Re: Operating system faults

I really despise Windows.  Vista especially.  I would love to convert my PC back to Windows XP, but haven't figured out how to do that.  Apparently, there is a way, but I would have to leave Vista on it anyway, so why bother?  Vista is VERY unstable.

Re: Operating system faults

No, you don't have to live with Vista any more. It cannot be converted-there is no backwards roll back. But you can buy a copy of XP and back up all of your stuff, then install XP a fresh and then put your data back on from the back ups.

Re: Operating system faults

Hmmm...Interesting.  I thought I had read somewhere that you have to leave Vista on in another partition somewhere.  I guess I definitely need to do some more research, because I have XP and would love to get rid of Vista.
