Topic: Do I need a clean machine to install ESXi
I have read the instructions but its not clear whether the installatation needs a clean machine. I suspect as it boots from the CD it would be the first OS.

Yes it installs from a Bootable CD and acts as the Operating System, If you want to add it to an existing Operating System you will need VMware Server.
Is VMware server free to trial? I can only find VMware ESXi. It would be quite useful to try out server on an existing machine to see it doing it's thing.
The server download can be accessed from www.vmware.com/products/server/ you need to login or register, enter your deatils and and email address where they will send the licence. If you choose the number of hosts your going to use and change your mind you have a chance to change the licence later.
It is free to download and acts as an application within your existing operating system. A good way to try out running multiple Operating Systems but I think ultimately you would want to run ESXi as a base for this type of system.
VMware Desktop is also available as a trial for 30 days I think. You can download in the same way as Server. I have downloaded it but not tried it yet.
What are the restrictions on using VMware ESXi i.e. Hardware. Do you need special processors or NIC's. Would it work on a standard PC?
See the other thread re: Hardware. There are restrictions, for most of us it would place it out of reach unless you have a propper Server.
