Topic: Customized Linux vs Windows

I'd very much appreciate it if anyone could help me with this. If you're familiar with netbooks, you'll know that many of them offer a special, customized version of Linux to go with the hardware. Don't you think that that would make a great solution for thin clients? Since Linux can work with less RAM than the rest of the OS's. Thanks a lot.

Re: Customized Linux vs Windows

Quite a few Thin Clients do come with Linux on board, usually you have a choice of Linux or XPe or Windows CE. I expect that Thinconnect and Thinpro Plus are Linux based.

Re: Customized Linux vs Windows

If I ever get my hands on one, I'd rather it had Windows CE, just so I can test it thoroughly and mess with it.

Re: Customized Linux vs Windows

HP Thinconnect and Thinpro Plus are Linux based and are certified to work with VMware products. It would be a foolish manufacturer who ignores those options today.

Re: Customized Linux vs Windows

Isn't there an Apple OS version for netbooks? I'd be the first to buy one if they had the Mac OS installed, but I don't think they can take it fully. Do you have any idea if it's possible?

Re: Customized Linux vs Windows

I don't think Apple will ever make such a toned down version of their OS. But you can hope, why not. Windows CE, on the other hand, does sound like a good solution.

Re: Customized Linux vs Windows

I do believe that yes, Apple will follow in to the netbooks world eventually. I mean they have a tiny version for the iPhone so why not? It wouldn't be that hard to do-Apple OS was never as hard on resources as windows is.

Re: Customized Linux vs Windows

The Apple Operating System is Unix based the same as Linux so all the criteria would be similar. Of course as soon as you add Apple to the OS title it adds $$$ to the unit.

Re: Customized Linux vs Windows

Yea, it would be incredibly expensive, probably not a netbook at all. Just think Mac Air. That's as easy as a netbook, the same low end specs (or almost the same) but too expensive.

Re: Customized Linux vs Windows

The Mac book air is just a little expensive but the thing has fairly good specs as I read it. I just don't like Macs I've used them in the past and their just as unreliable and Windows PCs are. But they are more expensive to get fixed.
