Topic: Hardware spec for ESXi

Whats the mimimum hardware requirement for running ESXi? I want to try this system out but I don't have a spare Server box, so I want to installit an a PC.

Re: Hardware spec for ESXi

I believe its a Single duel core processor and 1gb of ram. If you take a look at the download area you should find some help with specs.

Re: Hardware spec for ESXi

ESXi wont run on SATA drives so you will need Scsi drives. If your running it just for testing on a standard PC it is said that it runs on IDE but I don't know of anyone who has tried it.

Re: Hardware spec for ESXi

Whats the alternative to ESXi - if I want to run a Hypervisor.. Is it just to run VirtualBox or Vmserver. I read that VMserver isn't that easy to install and I really want to run it directly on the hardware.

Re: Hardware spec for ESXi

I think the trouble is for testing on a low end system all the Hypervisors have high minimum hardware requirements. I looked at Hyper-V but it has similar requirements particularly the requirement for VT technology which my spare server does not have.

Re: Hardware spec for ESXi

I think the best bet is to get a used machine with the right specs or use one of the alternatives such as Virtual Server 2005 or VirtualBox.

Re: Hardware spec for ESXi

Do you think that they will eventually have support for SATA hard drives? It seems that EIDE are becoming less common so ultimately they will have to, don't you think?

I guess so,  it depends on why they don't currently offer support for SATA, it might be for good technical reasons, It might just be because they are aiming all this at Server systems that are probably running SCSI cards.
