No, only one desktop but a couple of laptops too. I don't have the room for laptops for everyone and everything so we make do with laptops instead-they are fully functional and they are high spec. Don't need anything else really.

Well, you know how ants are attracted to sweet things? That's the idea of a honeypot-the idea is to attract hackers to the honeypot, presumably with the hopes that they don't reach your real stuff. Give them something to play with and keep them busy so that the rest is safe.

Re: Best Back up (1 replies, posted in General Desktop Virtualization Discussion)
I don't see anything wrong with using the more traditional methods of back up. They are not too expensive, if you use something like a large drive externally to back up (or two, one stored fire and flood safe off sight).

I agree that Macs are way more stable than Windows but even that can have some problems. I don't think that the OP was suggesting that they don't use any of those, rather was just discussing the problems with them all.

You can look up info online about the potential clashes of hardware. I've never really found it to be a huge problem though, and I think that there are way too many fears here about it. The basic stuff is easy, get the right type of memory and so on.

Even as a consumer I don't want to see integration. I like the choice, I like the competition that it fosters. People fight to be the best, and that is a good thing.

Unknowing I agree with that, but at the same time there can be ways around things, especially for a smart child who is technically minded. I think that a combination of approaches works best, especially when you have several children needing computers which makes it harder for you to supervise.

I don't have a machine to run it on or else I would have been tempted. This seems to be rather something good from what everyone is saying, so it would have been nice to have a sneak peak.

That's an interesting theory and if it worked it could make your trap more secure than anything else ever could be. If it worked then it would be wonderful but you'd need to work some to make it seem totally unprotected.

Jenna, I really don't see why a person would buy a mac to run PC software on it to be honest. If you buy a mac you use mac software, and you shouldn't need to run PC software because there should in theory be a mac equivalent.

Its the same as everything-industry was automated by turning our jobs over to robots. And now we are seeing IT professionals done away with the likes of thin clients, not needing so much of our attention-I feel like a traitor for helping our company put things in place!

I've done that a few times. And of course then there are the people who really are talking to you and you ignoring them because they've just stopped talking on their phone and you just can't tell the difference. Real pain in the rear.

I disagree with whether they can compete with PCs. I think that they can-they don't need to have the uber fancy architecture because their OS doesn't pound the poop out of them. The OS is way less resource intensive than windows-as it should be, especially since it is a BSD linux based OS.

Re: Virus Immune (15 replies, posted in Chip PC)
Linux servers are more secure on the whole than Windows systems are, but no they are not invulnerable. Nothing is-there will be loopholes and problems found with everything.
The point is that when Linux vulnerabilities are found there is instantly a hot team of developers worldwide working to fix it. Microsoft on the other hand takes time to get developers on it, its a slower process I think.

Well you see you can get machines that are otherwise going to be thrown away. You wouldn't have to pay for them potentially, and thus playing around to find what bits work together shouldn't be too bad. You can read up online and learn enough-it is not hard to do at all.

I really don't like the idea of that type of brain interface. I studied the potential when I was in university and it really did unsettle me. Sorry but I don't like the idea of someone having the ability to access my brain-and they would, the interface would work both ways.
Think of computer security today. Do you want to get a virus that wipes out your memory?

That is fairly common with Windows-they have been chasing Apple for a long time. They really do need to be a little more innovative if they want to retain their market share.

I agree that you don't want linux for gaming, and really the emulators are not good enough for games. I've tried them, they run sluggish and pretty horrible in truth. Networking didn't work on my laptop either, despite hours of working through the trouble shooter guide.

I see that Apple is now trying to compete a little more with the Windows market, with their budget box. I can't recall the name, but there is a simple Apple desktop that costs around $500 and does not include a monitor or keyboard.
Is is any good-can they stand up to modern needs or are they a bit too basic?

We have a number of Macs currently for the video and graphical manipulation because they are pretty much the best. Are there any thin clients or applications that would work as a good replacement? We're looking at 20-40 machines currently.

That's not technically true-they have a hard drive as I understand it but it is a small, solid state, flash drive instead of the more traditional moving parts drives.
They really do look neat little machines but I don't think that I could quite handle the tiny keyboard.
