Topic: Hyper-V
Hyper V is free but what does it support? I assume being an MS product it needs the latest technology as a minimum to run, so testing will be a problem unless you have the latest Server. I sthat close?

Thats about right, you need 64bit processor running Intel VT or AMD V chips, Data Execution Prevention (DEP) must be available and enabled. Minimum 1.4 chip and 1 gb of Ram. Minimum screen res is 800x600. Other than that it will run on anything ![]()
So I guess I can't stick it in my Compaq Deskpro P3 for a trial run then? If your looking to try out these Hypervisors I think they all need high spec hardware - I guess we'll have to spring for new box's. I'm going to just run off to Finance and see if they'll let me buy some new test kit ![]()
If you want to put together a bit of kit just to test this stuff on why not just build one? There are plenty of suppliers out there with barebones bundles including CPU. If you can find the right CPU all you need is the memory and the HDD's which you may already have.
Yikes, that really does want the very best. I guess its not surprising given that its MS, but still, requiring 64 bit is a rather high given how uncommon it is so far.

I'm not sure that 64bit is that uncommon these days, I suppose it depends on how old your PCs are but 64bit OSs in the business environment have been around for many years.

Is Hyper-V a bare metal hypervisor or is it running within Windows server. I looks like you install it after installing server so how is it different to Virtual Server?
