Topic: What is X Windows
I've seen the term used in conjunction with the Netvoyager systems, yet I'm unsure what it is. Is it in any way related to the Microsoft Windows system, and if not then what is it?

X windows is a graphical user interface system. It is used by Unix and Linux based systems, and is basically the system that works to handle the human, computer interfacing. That is, it provides a graphical representation of the system for you, and from you it takes keyboard and mouse instructions.

X Windows provides a Windows\Mac type desktop GUI for Unix based Operating Systems. Its easier to use a GUI that working on the command line in Unix type packages. Although I know a few Linux folk who would disagree.

Mac are a Unix based operating system-I believe that the basis is BSD linux. The vast majority of operating systems will now offer a graphical user interface, though command line is useful for certain work. My experience of working with X Windows was rather negative, it was sluggish and ran badly through the university terminal workstation system. It might have just been because of the age though.

It makes your Linux look and feel just like windows. It's good for first time Linux users, as to give them a familiar medium in which to work.
